Places in and around Novgorod

First we landed in St. Petersburg airport.

The last four windows at the top left are the apartment I stayed in.

This is Rachmaninov's monument. They have his music playing in the square.

 St. Sophia Cathedral.

These cathedral doors are carved wood, covered with metal. They were removed and hidden from the Germans during WWII.

 Our school.

The clock tower inside the kremlin in Novgorod.

There are more than 140 churches in the city. They were used to store merchant's goods to keep them safe from thieves.

We visited an archeological dig. There a lots of these around the town.

The old Novgorodians recorded their doings on birchbark. The archeologists can tell a lot about the civilization throughout the last 1100 years from these chronicles.

This is the writing of a 13 year old boy.

From the excavations, they can tell that this is how a typical household looked centuries ago.

Beach on the Volkhov River. This is where we went swimming.

More river views.  These were taken from the pedestrian bridge.

The Wooden Architecture Museum.

One of the main streets in town.

This is a map of the countries that were in the Hanseatic League for trading and doing business.  Novgorod was an international trade center for centuries.

These are some of the kremlin's towers.

Some views from the top of the kremlin.

Inside the kremlin are several museums, the library, the cathedral, the bell and clock towers, the millenium monument, and lots of tourists.

A walk along the river.

I really liked this sculpture. It was so detailed, his paintbox said "guache".

This is the Khutin Monastery.

An interesting and huge woodpile on the grounds.

Another monastery. This one was closed. Only ten people live here now. We walked around the grounds.

You can see many art students drawing and painting around town.

This is the remains of a palace in Yaroslav the Wise Courtyard.

Cathedral of the Sign, just a few blocks from the apartment.

Church of the Transfiguration, 2 blocks from the apartment.

The Sophia bell tower.

People take these wagons for a ride around town.

A few blocks north of the apartment.  There are churches everywhere.

Some houses in the town of Staraya Russa, where Dostoyevsky lived for a while.

Feodor Dostoyevskiy's house, which is now a museum.

F.D.'s church. It was very fancy inside.

In Staraya Russa there is a resort and spa that has healing mineral waters. We sat by this fountain and inhaled the healthiness.

This is the lake to swim in to cure all your ailments.

The war memorial and eternal flame in the kremlin.
